On October 16, 2024, the College of Engineering and Rural Technology (CERT Meerut) organized an engaging talkathon titled “Is AI Causing More Harm Than Good to the Job Market?” This thought-provoking event brought students and experts together to analyze the transformative effects of artificial intelligence on employment and the future workforce.
The session shed light on the positive impact of AI, highlighting its role in creating new job opportunities and enhancing productivity across industries. Speakers emphasized that while AI may displace certain jobs, projections indicate it could lead to a net increase in employment globally. From improving efficiency in manufacturing to revolutionizing healthcare, AI’s potential to empower workers was a key focus.
Concerns about automation replacing routine tasks and its potential to disproportionately affect marginalized groups were explored in depth. The panelists called for proactive measures, such as integrating AI education and skill development, to ensure inclusivity in the evolving job market.
“A critical highlight of the talkathon was the discussion on job displacement and inequality, with experts stressing the importance of retraining and upskilling to equip the workforce for an AI-driven world.”
The event saw active participation from students, who shared their perspectives on how AI might shape their career trajectories. Attendees left the session with valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
